It is true that at this stage of the competition, the round of 16, it is difficult to predict the winner of football's most prestigious trophy, the Uefa Champions League. However, considering the current form and squad of the teams available, we can make a good guess, can't we?
Based on my own perspective, sentiments aside, the current Real Madrid team is very likely to make it 14 in total with reasons below:-
- They are currently well balanced in every aspect of the pitch.
- They have the squad to defeat any team.
- They know the tournament more than any other team.
- They have Zinedine Zidane, a man who has participated four times in the competition, one as an assistant coach and three as the main coach and he has never missed lifting the trophy in all.
Above are the major reasons why I feel Real Madrid would end up bringing back the trophy to Spain. This does not mean that I am neglecting the threats posed by other giant teams as the Uefa Champions League is a game of MEN.
Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Manchester City, Barcelona, these are just few of the giants teams that can stop Real Madrid.
Liverpool in particular are currently in the form of their life and have reached the final in the last two editions of the competition, lifting one and losing the other to Real Madrid.
This season however, Liverpool look all but certain to lift the Premier league at this stage and have every time to channel their remaining strength into making it two consecutive Uefa Champions League triumph.
They, just like Real have the squad, the spirit and the coach for it. I will not be surprised if they lift the trophy again but I can't help but express my sentiments in preferring Real Madrid for the win, why? because they appear in the mood for it.
It is still a long way to May 30th and Real Madrid would have to defeat Manchester City first this February before extending their hope to matching onto Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul.
