Before the UEFA Champions League, there's been the European Cup.
In 1991, FC Red Star won it in Bari, Italy. After a goalless draw they were better in the penalty shootout than Olympique de Marseille and they lifted the trophy.
Before reaching the finals, they won the matches against Grasshopper, Rangers F.C. , Dynamo Dresden, and some club from Bavaria. Not being satisfied with that, they went on to win the 1991 International Cup played in Tokyo against Colo-Colo of Chile (the winners of that year's Copa Libertadores).
That year, if there's been a trophy to be lifted - FC Red Star did it.
And then something unpleasant smelling hit the fan, the country went through a violent breakup,... wars, sanctions, corruption,.... I've put a ton of links above that you can follow and learn more about the history of the club, its glory days and what followed.
In short, since that glorious year the club has never again qualified for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. Well, until the last night!
The last night in Salzburg Austria, Red Star went from losing 2-0 to scoring two goals in two minutes. Since the first leg finished 0-0, the 2-2 result has been enough for the club to qualify and make some people in Salzburg and Belgium unhappy :-)
That would be all, for now. Thank you for reading and good luck!
