It was yet another pre-season match action for Chelsea who are just coming back from an important Rakuten cup victory against Barcelona. The blues locked horn against Reading for their third to the last game of their pre-season campaign. It has been quite a long time these two teams met, the last time, Lampard was probably still a Chelsea player. Chelsea eventually edged the home team with a narrow win, a game that saw lots of goals scored on both ends.

Chelsea are making very big progress this pre-season so far, they are currently in their 5th pre-season match action as they try to get ready for the main actions when the new season begins. This might not be the best of games, but Frank Lampard will be pleased to see the progress the team is making in terms of scoring goals and the right mentality.

Reading are also making good progress this pre-season, they are not far away from the start of the new Championship season, so for them, it was a great game to play against one of the biggest clubs in Europe. The manager will be pleased with the team’s performance against Chelsea even though they were on the losing end, they will be satisfied with the way they played. Last season wasn’t great for them in the championship, and they will be looking to get things right when the new season begins.

Brief Post-Match Analyses

It was a very good atmosphere at the Madejski Stadium, with quite a good number of fans present to witness the game.

Chelsea setup in two different formations and personnel in both halves like they’ve done in most games this pre-season. They set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation for the first half and a 4-1-2-1-2 formation for the second half. Reading, on the other hand, setup in a 4-4-1-1 formation.

Reading began the game as the better side, having more of the ball in the first few minutes of the game and trying to make things happen, which finally paid off, as they got the early lead, However, they couldn’t hold on to the lead for long as Chelsea got the equalizer a few minutes later. Chelsea ended the first half coming from behind to go into half time with the lead. A similar situation in the second half, but this time, Chelsea showed more dominance in the game and going on to make it 4, before Reading added another goal to reduce the deficit to 4-3.

Josh Barrette, Michael Morrison and Sam Baldock were the goal scorers for Reading in the 13th, 49th and 71st minute respectively. Goals from Ross Barkley, Kenedy, and two from Mason Mount in the 22nd, 42nd, 57th and 60th minute respectively, were enough to give Chelsea the narrow win at the Madejski Stadium. A good game it was for both teams as they keep preparing for the new season.
