So I decided to break a little bit from my ongoing what do you expect series, by reacting and giving my own opinion concerning the latest reports that Chelsea are keeping a close eye on David Alaba, the Bayern Munich left-back who can also be deployed as a left center back when needed. As we all know, Lampard is seriously looking for a quality left-back to compliment Reece James at right-back, who have been nothing short of quality ever since he was introduced to the squad this season.
At the moment, Chelsea currently have Marcus Alonso and Emerson occupying the left-back position, however, both players haven’t really matched the quality that Lampard seeks from his left-back. As Lampard has made it known, the full-back positions is very important to how he wants his team to play. Emerson who was preferred in the left-back position has fallen off the cliff in terms of his form and performances and has received a lot of criticism from the Chelsea fans for his dip in form and poor performances this season.
Alonso, on the other hand, hasn’t been great either, but he offers so much in the final third of the pitch and his ability to score crucial goals as a left-back has made him the undisputed preferred option in the left-back position. Nevertheless, Lampard wants more from full-back than just scoring goals. He wants his full-back to immensely contribute to the gameplay and how the team attacks, especially putting in dangerous crosses in the box for the attacking players to feed on. This is something both Alonso and Emerson have failed to do so far. Hence why Lampard is in search for a left-back who can possess those qualities.
Earlier last month, Chelsea were linked to names like Telles, Chilwell, Hakimi, however, as things are right now, it is looking more and more unlikely that Chelsea will be getting any of these names. However, nothing is impossible as we have seen in the past, we just have to wait and see what happens. Right now, Alaba has taken the Chelsea headlines as the latest full-back to be linked to Chelsea.
Alaba isn’t a new name when it comes to left-back, in fact he is a well-known left-back for his amazing qualities and what he has done for Bayern Munich these past few years. His tremendous pace and ability to attack and defend made him one of the best left-back in the world, which for me he still is. Looking at his qualities, we can now agree why Lampard wants him at Chelsea as he is everything that the current Chelsea full-back lacks. When it comes to goals, Alaba is known to very good at scoring goals as a left-back… Not only that, he is also very good at defending which is something the current Chelsea full-backs lacks (ability to properly defend).
Nonetheless, no one knows if these reports are true and whether this deal can happen… only time will tell. For me, if Chelsea manage to sign Alaba away from Bayern Munich, then their problems are closer to getting solved, as they will be getting a player who will drastically improve the team. We have seen Chelsea play this season and we can confidently say that some of the issues they’ve had in their games has been poor performances from the left-back positions and also poor defending from the left-back position. With Alaba in the team and a few more quality names, then Chelsea could potentially be ready to challenge for the title next season.
What do you think? – Do you think Alaba will be a great signing for Chelsea?
I would love to read your thoughts and opinions… Enjoy your day
