Earlier yesterday the report broke out that Chelsea have decided to retain and have completed the signing of Kovacic who was on loan from Real Madrid last season. According to the reports, Chelsea had to get the opinion of their soon to be announced new manager Frank Lampard, before agreeing to Real Madrid’s terms for the player. Yes it is true that Chelsea are currently unable to register any new player currently due to the situation of their transfer ban issues, however, Kovacic was already a registered player for Chelsea last season and his registration lifespan is still active which makes it possible for Chelsea to sign the player and renew his registration since he is already a registered player under Chelsea.
Last season was a very good season for not only Chelsea as a club, but also for Kovacic as a player who won a trophy in his first season in the premier league. With lots of game time to his name already in a Chelsea shirt, there is a strong possibility that he will most likely get a gun number of games next season.
Some section of the Chelsea fans are totally not happy about the signing of Kovacic, saying that he doesn’t contribute a lot in the offensive phase and doesn’t score enough goals, while some believe that he is a great signing due to the transfer ban situation and also will definitely be an option for any position in the midfield.
For me, I think Chelsea made the right decision to sign him and I also think Kovacic, made the right decision to join Chelsea on a permanent because he will most likely earn more game time and showcase what he is all about at the bigger stages, most especially in the champions league, as opposed to going back to Real Madrid where it will be a very difficult task for him to break into the first team squad already packed with lots of world-class midfielders.
For Chelsea, he is a great addition to the squad, his abilities on the ball cannot be questioned and his versatility across the midfield is undeniable. With his addition to the Chelsea squad, the coming new manager will have a vast variety of midfielders to choose from for his needs, and also rest assured that he has a midfielder who can fill in the gaps in any position in the midfield, which is why I believe he will be massive for Chelsea next season and beyond.
A lot of fans can argue that he doesn’t assist enough nor score a tangible number of goals, which is quite correct, but I still feel that his main attributes as a player is to play in deeper positions in the midfield and use his abilities on the ball to contribute to the play rather than be the player who makes the final assist pass or the player to score the goals. Yes, it is great for any midfielder to assist and score goals which are the areas he really needs to work on and improve on, but overall, he is a great addition to the squad and also a quality player and his abilities will be of great value to the Chelsea team coming next season.
