Every time Maradona opens his mouth he just throws fire. And not because his statements are piercing truths, rather because he poisons the world without contributing with valuable inputs.
In his most recent take, he picked up on Messi, mocking him by implying that Messi goes to the bathroom 20 times before jumping into the field. That's the reason he cannot be a leader.
He had previously stated that Messi will never get all what he accomplished. And probably it's truth because I think Messi will never be kicked out of the world cup due to doping.
Maradona will be in the top 3 in all history. His abilities were way above the average soccer player. He also played in a age where the rudeness in the pitch were not punished as it is now.
But all that has continually been diminished by his behavior. Let's not forget the embarrassment in the past Russia World Cup where he seemed high, making obscene gestures during the game Argentina Vs Nigeria.
Now going back to his most recent take on Messi, this has provoked much jumble from all angles. Supporters and detractors have come into battle just because Maradona started the fire.
Maradona won the Mexico 86's World Cup where he was the greatest star. That was the peak of his career. But he and his supporters always use this to discredit Messi. But what many forget is that Maradona played with competent players led by an excellent coach who had an idea of how to play.
He played alongside figures who were qualified team-mates. On the contrary, Messi plays with guys who don't understand his way of playing in the field. In the mentioned game against Nigeria, we observed how Argentina couldn't make two passes in a row.
Nobody disseminates the real reasons why Messi plays so well with Barcelona. I think some people need to listen to experts such as Guardiola and Carló ancelotti to know soccer in depth. These are very knowledgeable coaches who can teach a lot about this sport.
And it's not only about his team-mates, it's also about the ecosystem. He plays inside a system where everyone has a role and knows what to do in the field. And such harmony is not found in the Argentina National Team.
Even good promises like Dybala has declared that he is not comfortable playing with Messi. If this player is among those ones who are supposed to bring more freshness, I think Argentina is doomed. Somebody should reminds Dybala that Xavi once said that those who can't play well with Messi are not good for this sport because Messi makes everyone around play better. What he just needs is that others can understand his game.
But let's do some facts to compare Maradona and Messi:
Goals
Maradona: 349 Goals
Messi: 617 and counting
Titles:
Maradona: 12
Messi: 33
Goals with the National Team
Maradona: 34
Messi: 65 and counting
As A Coach
Maradona criticizes all the coaches that take charge of the national team. But when he was in charge, it was a disaster. When Germany beat him in the South Africa World Cup, the German coach explained in the post game conference how he won. He detailed all the mistakes Argentina had, specially the ones committed by Maradona.
There were some videos in the internet where we can watch Maradona froze without response as if he didn't know what to do. There were no indication nor change of strategy during the game. It was obvious that he was not up to the challenge.
Out of Soccer
When Maradona has ventured our of soccer, everything has been a misfire. He has gone to totalitarian regions to support dictators. He has spoken ill of many people who don't share his views. And though there are some truths in some things he says, we don't need him to speak in the name of us. He doesn't have the morals to diminish other people.
FIFA takes him to events hoping that he can instill some values, but he just ends up being a disappointment. Even when he goes to Italy, a place where he is venerated as a supreme God, he manages to embarrass himself. There are videos on the web, showing him drunk in the streets of Naples.
Anyways, there are people that still love him no matter what he does or speaks. But when we analyze the criteria any athlete should have, what he does out of the sport counts as well. All professional athletes must be an example to the world. They can have views and ideas and express them, but with respect, and always contributing to make the world a little more better.
