Bringing all the biggest football headlines to Scorum in one place. United cruise to victory. City stumble to an angry Chelsea. And Liverpool sit atop the Iron Throne.

Before making my foray into the world of sports blogging here on Scorum, I previously wrote and worked on another sports project. Global XI was a website and YouTube channel dedicated to reviewing the biggest football headlines coming out of Europe. I say "was" because will working on the project for several months, a couple of the guys working with me became too busy to continue with it.

At the same time, I had discovered Scorum, with the help of Vlad via LinkedIn, and quickly shifted my newly found free time over to creating content here. I’ve continued that trend for a few months since the summer.

Over the weekend, as I thought about what to write for Scorum, it suddenly hit me: I’d revisit my previous content where I detailed and discussed the top football headlines coming out of Europe. Thus, here we are.

Let me know if you enjoy this type of post. If it goes over well, I may make this a regular Monday morning publication. In doing so, I'll take turns covering the headlines from England, Italy, Spain and Germany.

Now let’s grab a paper and get to reading.

Mirror Sport: "Win The Title? That's Rich!"

Result: Man United 4 - 1 Fulham

It had been a few years since Fulham had made the trip to Old Trafford and even longer (2003) since they won there. Before kickoff, Fulham might have fancied their chances meeting United while the Red Devils are in struggling form. Likely no better time for Fulham to take on United at home, but optimism would quickly change to dread, as the away team went down 3 goals in the first half. After that, it was a forgone conclusion.

But United’s convincing home win against a freshly promoted side sitting last in the league has done nothing in regards to convincing critics or providing Jose with cover. As seen in the headline above, Jose continues to point the figure at City’s spending as reason for their success, completely ignoring the 4 clubs that sit above United who spent sustainably less than United. Sorry Jose, I’m not buying that excuse—yes pun intended.

Star: "Jose Going Nowhere"

While we are on the subject, it’s almost comical to think about United winning the league right now or in the near future, despite out spending everyone besides one club. So far is the depth United has fallen from grace, that winning the league is not longer a goal. Merely making top 4 is the standard Jose has set.

Now tell us Jose, as inquisiting minds would like to know, has United not spent enough to make top four? Are we to believe, under your tenor, buying Pogba, Sanchez and Lukaku is not enough for a top four finish? While also being so lucky to have De Gea in goal.

Since I brought up those three players, let's talk about them and their massive declines in form under Jose.

  • Pogba was the most desired and expensive player when United bought him. Since then he's never once gotten close to his Juve form, and now the Jose-Pogba love affair has completely blown up.
  • Lukaku was top league goal scorer when United bought him. Look at his form now? How many hundreds of minutes did he play this season without scoring?
  • Alexis Sánchez has got to be one of my favorites. Leaves a failing Arsenal to a United that now sits below Arsenal.

Let's also note, while Jose's been at United, Arsenal went from top 4, to complete dumpster fire, to Wenger-out , to rebuilding, and to now being back in top 4 again. That all transpired while Jose has wasted so much money and talent at United.

Then to turn around and say the reason is because City outspends them, while sitting 6th place, is the lamest excuse I have ever heard. To be honest, I am shocked anyone goes along with it.

If Jose isn't going anywhere soon, United fans need to resign themselves with top 4 being their biggest goal. Jose will never challenge the league while at United. It's not going to happen.

The Observer: "City slayer"

Result: Chelsea 2 - 0 Man City

The big top 4 clash between Chelsea and City left everyone with 2 predominate talking points after the match—what took place on the pitch and what took place in the stands. The first being Sarri’s unsettling of Pep’s near perfect side. Prior to the match, Sarri claimed, having loss to Pep in every meeting before, that he had no idea how to beat the Spaniard. Outside the Chelsea faithful, no one gave them much of a chance beating City, myself included.

As pundits predicated a shutout victory for City, it would be the exact opposite when the 90’ whistle blew. A massive win for the London club that could ended up being vital for them qualifying for Champions League.

Chelsea scored their first goal mere seconds before the half-time whistle. Sarri couldn't have asked for a more demoralizing time to score. The solo goal lead gave them the confidence and conviction to come out in the 2nd half and finish what they started.

They were disciplined in defense and showed real heart to hold fast against a brutal City side. It was Hazard who showed up at 78' to put the game out of reach. As for the win, all praise to Chelsea--they certainly deserve the 3 points. It's a shame that the huge victory was somewhat overshadowed by sideline misbehaving.

Independent Headline: "Chelsea investigate 'racist' abuse"

It was racist behavior by Chelsea fans that sucked the air out of the London victory. Millions of fans watched as Raheem Sterling chased down an out-of-bounds ball only to be met with angry racists fans streaming hateful bigoted slurs at him. There was no hiding it. It was all clearly televised for everyone to see.

Sterling responded by saying he wasn’t surprised at all, claiming he expected such behavior form Chelsea fans. However, he blames newspaper headlines for fueling such racism within the Premier League, using news stories about him as evidence. Taking to Instagram, Sterling shared 2 similar headlines from the Daily Mirror about him and a fellow teammate. The contrast is damming.

After the match, authorities did interview Sterling to record evidence, which has now lead to an investigation of the fans. Many anti-racism and anti-hate groups are calling on Chelsea to issue bans to the guilty parties. It is still unclear what will happen as the probe is ongoing. This is far from the first time. Similar incidences have plagued Chelsea for a very long time. If the FO fails to act quickly, as it appears they will not, the stereotype will remain. Chelsea should demand better.

Until Next Time

There are your 3 major headlines coming out of the Premier League after the weekend. United continue to sit in 6th place as pressure is still being applied to Jose. The perfect Man City team is no longer so perfect after being undone by Chelsea, and Liverpool now sit atop the table. I hope you enjoyed this style of post. Please let me know if you did down in the comments. If so, look for more Headlines posts from me in upcoming weeks.
