Luka Modric last night won the 2018 version of the Ballon d’Or to put to an end the 10 years dominance of the award between the duos of Cristiano Ronaldo who now players for Juventus and Barcelona play maker Lionel Messi.

Modric has over the last few years played for Real Madrid led them to a wonderful performance at the heart of the mid field on the three consecutive occasions that Madrid lifted the UEFA Champions League Trophy under head coach Zidane. He captained an under rate Croatia team to the FIFA 2018 World Cup finals where they lost to a more stronger French side. Modric was voted the best male football player of 2018 by beating Cristiano Ronaldo who came second and Antoine Griezmann; the man who led France to win the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

While to BBC Sport, Modrid said he was dedicating his award to all the players who missed out of the in 10 year’s dominance of Messi and Ronaldo. He said the award was for players who probably deserved to have won it but didn’t like Xavi, Andrea Iniesta or Wesley Sneijder. ed

Many football pundits had argued that they wanted to see something different as soccer lover were getting tire of seeing the two great players coming up on the podium year in year out for the award.

While many soccer fans still holds some argument if Modric deserved the award some other are saying provided it’s the duo of Ronaldo and Messi, it is a welcome idea.

The other five runners up include Lionel Messi in far 5th position followed by PSG young star Kylianm Mbappe.
