Galatasaray could not hold their own against the Russian champions in extremely bad conditions and icy temperatures in Moscow. The Terim side lost 2-0 to Lokomotive Moscow after a weak performance, and missed out on their UEFA Champions League eighth-finals appearance one match from the end of the group stage. While Porto and Schalke will be celebrating their progress in the Estadio Dragao before the direct duel tonight, Moscow and Galatasaray are now looking to participate in the UEFA Europa League. The Russians are close to the Turkish record champions with their first trio. In their last group match at home against Porto, however, the Yellow Reds still have third place in their hands.
The game in the RZD Arena had little to offer football fans. Both teams had a lot of trouble in the difficult field conditions to maintain the ball. An orderly game structure as well as fluid combinations therefore remained a bad sign. After the first big chance of Fedor Smolov, who hit the post in the 4th minute, nothing happened in Moscow for a long time. Only before the halftime whistle it became exciting again, when Grzegors Krychowiak (43.) used the sleepiness in the Galatasaray defense and scored to 1-0. The ball was falsified untenable for keeper Fernando Muslera of Ryan Donk. The visitors had their best scene through Eren Derdiyok in the 23rd minute. The Swiss only just missed out on Garry Rodrigues.
As before the change, the Russians were the more dangerous team after the break tea and increased the score to 2:0 in the 54th minute. After an unscheduled double pass with Smolov, the ball landed again at the feet of Vladislav Ignatiev. The 31-year-old midfielder had no trouble getting the ball into the goal. The Turkish record holders only pressed for a short time after the 2-0 defeat, and five minutes later Henry Onyekuru gave them the chance to score. In addition, the Turks could not oppose the home side much more. A very fragile Galatasaray back team ensured that Lokomotive Moscow were closer to 3-0 in the end than the Yellow Reds were to the goal.
