For majority part of the present season, Manchester United have found it difficult to buzz the midfield against the top-six teams.
The likes of Fred and Scott Mac Tominay, have left so much to be desired. Especially when compared to the creativity produced by rival midfielders.
Where the problem lies
The lack of creativity in central midfield could be traced all the back to early post-Sir Alex Ferguson days.
Ever since the departure of the Old guard, United have found it difficult to purchase quality central midfielders.
This has been prevalent in their approach toward games. More often than not, United are guilty of moving the ball side to side with sheer indecisiveness.
United Midfielders who could be excluded from "a lack of creativity" indictments
The likes of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, have done pretty well providing a measure of creativity for the United side.
Nonetheless, Pogba has been absent for a while. On Bruno’s part, he is more often been played high up the pitch, leaving the central midfield positions below par.
With these in mind, the major culprits to be discussed today are Fred and Scott Mac Tominay.
Strength and weaknesses of the culprits
Fred: When it comes to high line pressing and defending, the Brazilian is pretty much of great benefit to the team.
However, Fred lacks quality passing decisiveness and has been completely disheartening with his shots on opposition goal.
A shot by Fred at opposition goal, once got Ole Gunner Solskjaer chuckling a bit, due to how distant it was from the target.
Scott Mac Tominay: For Mac Tominay his finishing has been remarkable. Still, like Fred, Scott still lacks decisiveness in his passing prowess.
Conclusion
For a United team known for playing with a bit of swagger and pace, players like Fred and Scott are not those to be counted on.
No doubt, they both have provided some good memories for the fans. Still, United will need some more creativity if they desire to remain at the top.
