Last week super Sunday presented a goal feast for soccer lovers across Europe, While soccer fans across the world were focused on the 6 nil drubbing of Chelsea FC by the hand of premier league counterpart, Manchester City, there were goal feast in the UK and across Europe, Celtics 5 nil thrashing of St Johnstone, Hearts 4 nil walloping of Auchinleck Talbot, and Aberdeens 4-1 win over Queen of Sth completed a thrilling day in the Scottish Premier League while there was a 4 nil win for Werder Bremen over Augsburg in the German Bundesliga, a 2-4 defeat of Nantes by Nimes in the French Ligue 1, amongst all these scorelines, one results caught the eye, it was in the Portuguese Primeira Liga where season campaigner and title hopeful, Benfica put 10 goals past their opponent, CD Nacional in a matchday 21 to record the biggest win in the league since 1964 when Benfica thumped Seixal 11-3, reminiscence of Erie Explosion defeats of their rival Fayetteville Force huh. A really moanful and embarrassing day for clubs and fans at the receiving end of these trouncing.
It is the weekly Happy Moanday by @pete, if you are struggling with what to blog about, it is a contest for you.
It is hard to believe that such result still exists in Europe's top league, such as the Primeira Liga, the top professional association football division of the Portuguese football league system, founded since 85 years ago, 1934. Benfica, 1 of the only 3 clubs that have never been relegated from the Primeira Liga (Porto and Sporting Lisbon the other 2), is the most decorated club in the division with 36 Liga titles, 26 Portuguese cups amongst other laurels. CD Nacional, on the other hand, can hardly boast of any success, her best place finish in top-tier football was a 4th-place-Liga finish, and sitting in 16th position on log table, Nacional's matchup against Benfica who sits on 2nd place, just 1 point adrift leader, FC Porto, can be likened to the tale of David versus Goliath, just that in this case, David did not come out victorious.
Coming into the matchday 21, Benfica has the right momentum, they were on a winning run of 3 matches, her last home match ended in a 5-1 thrashing of Boavista, and confidence was high to put a couple past Nacional, a team on a 5-match winless run, 4 defeats and a draw.
Match Highlights:
Key Moments Of The Match:
1', Goals started raining down as early as the kickoff, a swift interplay down the left side of Nacional's box between striker, Haris Seferovic and left back, Alex Grimaldo saw the latter fired past Nacional goalkeeper, Daniel Martins Guimaraes just 33 seconds into the match.
17', The omens were not good for CD Nacional, their 1st choice left back got injured and was replaced in the 17th minute.
21', Just 4 minutes after Nacional's substitution, Benfica got their cushion goal, provider of the 1st goal, Haris Seferovic benefited from strike partners through pass to made 2 nil.
27', Haris Seferovic set his eyes on a hat trick with his 2nd goal of the night, a chip over onrushing Nacional goalkeeper, Guimaraes, after a weighted pass from a teammate and right back, Andre Almeida.
45', Benfica went into the break with a 3 nil lead.
50', 5 minutes into the restart, Benfica scored the 4th goal, league-best-player candidate, Afonso Pizzi Fernandes with a lofted cross into Nacional box, teammate and Seferovic strike partner, Joao Sequeira Felix duly obliged with a headed goal.
54', Pizzi got his deserved goal, a converted spot-kick, after he was brought down in the area by Nacional's Sergio Marakis.
56', Pizzi was dictating the proceedings on the night, another lofted corner-kick was headed home by Benfica's centre-back, Reis Ferreira who want in on the act.
64', Ferreira's pairing and centre-back, Ruben Dias would not be outshined by his teammate, he got his headed goal too from a Ferreira Silvas set piece.
85', Substitute were not left out of the goal feast, Goncalves Jonas Oliveira who came in to replace double goal scorer, Seferovic, got his 1st of the night from a deflected free-kick at the edge of the box.
88', Ferreira Silva, who was lively all night and already has an assist, got his goal on the night too, another Pizzi assist.
90', Jonas completed his double in the 90th minute to complete an emphatic 10 nil victory over CD Nacional. CD Nacional's woeful season continues, It seems the Primeira Liga is one step too high for Nacional.
The neutrals will feel sorry for Nacional fans, no fans should experience such an enduring evening, a moanful evening it was for the fans. Yea! rival fans will rub it on your face, just laugh it off, stranger scorelines had been recorded in the past. My advice for the fans and club comes in wise sayings,
