LFC Match Summary

There has been a lot of noise in recent weeks about Liverpool needing to forget about the Champions League in order to prioritise the Premier League. In truth, Klopp can't win in that scenario. When the Reds rested players against Wolves in the cup earlier in the season, people were in uproar about Liverpool not respecting the competition. Nonetheless, there is a minor argument to be made about Liverpool potentially benefiting from having to play less games, but the Champions League is such a great competition to be in that no true supporter really wants to see their team knocked out. Thankfully, Klopp decided to play a full strength team against Bayern Munich tonight and it paid dividends.

I was perhaps overly calm prior to kickoff this evening. These are the kinds of games that supporters dream about watching their team play in but the 0-0 draw at Anfield in the first leg of the tie put Liverpool in the driving seat due to the away goals rule. With van Dijk returning to central defence, I had a feeling that we'd have enough in defence and attack to see out this test and progress to the next round.

Liverpool didn't play well tonight. Sure, they won the game thanks to a few moments of brilliance but the overall quality of football on display was poor from both teams throughout the game. Indeed, Liverpool looked like they were doing their best to help Bayern Munich by giving away possession far too easily and committing unnecessary fouls. There were certainly a few notable performances, however, and Mane carried over his confidence from 2 goals in the Premier League at the weekend and found the net twice again tonight. Of course, van Dijk was a monster in defence as always and Fabinho, who came on for an injured Henderson, put in some much needed tackles at times. Salah's top quality pass to Mane for Liverpool's 3rd goal will hopefully give him the confidence he needs to kick on again following a brief drought in the goal department, but he has certainly looked sharp in other areas of his game throughout this period.

Something that's been hanging over Liverpool's head this season is the fact that they've been terrible away from home in the Champions League. Losing all 3 away fixtures in the group stage, there was a slight worry that Klopp's team wouldn't be able to get the job done tonight. When you take Bayern Munich's recently form into consideration and the fact that they beat Wolfsburg 6-0 at the Allianz Arena at the weekend, Liverpool have certainly found the answers to the questions surrounding their ability to win on the road. Job done. Onward and upward.

The Final Word

All in all, this was a perfectly executed plan on behalf of Klopp and his team. The away goals rule certainly helped Liverpool to come up with a strategy and the Reds were able to rely on Mane's clinical finishing to put this fixture to bed. Liverpool now advance to the quarter finals of the Champions League and this win should hopefully give them the confidence to go on and get another good result against Fulham in the next round of Premier League fixtures.
