LFC Match Summary

Other than Manchester United, Everton is the team Liverpool supporters both love and hate to play against. Being a local derby, there is always something extra on the line in a match like this and the fact that Liverpool are in the title race made things extra spicy. I'm rarely confident going into these games but felt that the Reds could get a win at Goodison Park this afternoon. After all, Everton have been terrible all season and the squad is full of players that wouldn't make it anywhere near a big club. Nonetheless, the Everton players and crowd turned up for once today. Intent on celebrating a dent in Liverpool's title challenge, both performed pretty well throughout the match. The Everton players did just enough to keep the crowd behind them, although failed to really pose much threat in the game.

I thought Liverpool's team selection was pretty much on point although would have preferred to see Keita in midfield instead of Henderson. With Firmino just coming back from injury, it made sense to keep him on the bench, but I would have probably opted for Shaqiri on the wing instead of Origi. Liverpool huffed and puffed but were let down again by a misfiring attack. Salah had multiple opportunities to give Liverpool the win but played a pretty terrible game and wasted any chance that fell to him. Van Dijk was a monster in defence as always but Liverpool needed much more than a clean sheet in this match. A win here would have put Liverpool in a strong position in the title race but they have now conceded to a relentless Manchester City and it's going to be difficult for the Reds going forward.

Klopp has frustrated me in recent weeks due to his poor game management. When you're playing against Everton and are desperate for a goal, the last thing you should be doing is bringing on Milner and Lallana when you have Shaqiri and Keita on the bench. It makes no sense to me whatsoever. Instead of a like-for-like substitution, I would have preferred to see Origi remain on the pitch and Wijnaldum replaced with Shaqiri. A draw is not a good result for Liverpool here and this could come back to haunt them at the end of the season.

The Final Word

Writing a match report just after a game has finished is always a little risky because emotions are high. Nonetheless, I can't help but feel that Liverpool's hopes of winning the title have now been extinguished. 7 points would have been a decent return over the last week but 5 feels poor considering Manchester United and Everton were both there for the taking. There is a long way to go, but it looks like I'll have to settle for disappointment yet again. A bad day for the Reds.
