Finally we have spent all the fuss and fanfare of the FIFA The Best Awards, which tried to reward the best of the season not without many controversies in between. But there was a player that nobody missed during the awards and that at this point has become almost a complete stranger in the world of football: Neymar.
Since his arrival in Barcelona, the Brazilian had become a regular in this type of prize, always among the finalists and in the spotlight. However, this year it seems that everyone has forgotten about Neymar, since he did not receive a single vote for The Best; and the truth is that it is not surprising that this happened.
Recall that last summer Neymar surprised strangers by signing with PSG and become the most expensive transfer in history, leaving Barcelona after 4 seasons where he won everything with the culé club. With this Neymar sought to dissociate himself from the shadow of Messi with the clear intention of becoming the best in the world.
However, his plan, until now, has been a resounding failure. The Brazilian arrived in Paris with a huge expectation, but so far it has been nothing more than a big disappointment of 222 million euros. Neymar immediately and realized his mistake when signing with PSG, since being in a league of second European level it would be impossible to be at the level of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Neymar only took a month to get bored of Ligue 1 football, so he had nothing better to do than take refuge in the Paris night and in his constant parties.
In spite of everything, we saw that Neymar still had an opportunity to become the best player in the world: if he won the desired Champions with PSG and won the World Cup with Brazil, the throne would be his. But an injury deprived him of being in the return of the 8th final against Real Madrid and said goodbye to what remained of the season. While in the World Cup, Neymar was far from showing his best football; part of the fault of his injury, partly part of his fault. Everyone, including myself, hoped that this would be the Neymar World Cup, where the National Team would be placed on the back and take it to win its coveted sixth star; but nothing could be further from reality, all that we expected from Neymar turned out to be just smoke.
The worst thing for the Brazilian is that Russia seemed to be his last train to reach his goal to dethrone Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and in this way be the heir of the world football he was called to be since he was 17 years old. But Neymar is not a child, he is 26 years old and the possibility of winning a Golden Ball is increasingly distant for him. At that age Cristiano Ronaldo already had a Golden Ball in his showcase, while Messi boasted of having won 4; but Neymar has not even been close to winning the first one.
Of course, if we review the numbers of Neymar last season are not bad, in fact ended up being one of the scorers of Ligue 1. But is that simply the level of the French league does not compare at any point to the Spanish league, example. Neymar does what he wants in the fields of France, so much so that he gets bored and has to entertain himself humiliating the opponent with his skills with the ball.
The sad reality for the Brazilian is that he is lost and unable to aspire to anything in Paris Saint-Germain. He came to France to lead the team and today is behind Cavani and Mbappé, the real stars of the team. And Neymar knows all this, he knows he made a mistake. That is why he tried to offer himself as he was to Real Madrid even before finishing last season. But his dubious extra-court behavior coupled with the high sum of money they asked for made him discard Real Madrid. When you sign a contract with a sheikh, it's as if you sell your soul to the devil.
Neymar has gone from being "The Heir" to "The Forgotten" and his chances of being the new king of world football have completely vanished. It is true that he is still young, but he is light years away from being the best in the world, besides his performance on the court is in inevitable decline and it seems that Neymar does not want to do much to be different either. The Brazilian only has to watch as Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo remain on top while Mbappé rushes to take his place as heir to the throne of the best player in the world. Neymar will go on to history as the player who wanted to be the King, but he simply could not and ended up abdicating while still a prince.
