League One relegates Sunderland announced their decision to sack centre-back Papy Djilobodji after the player was 10 weeks late in his return from season break. Indeed, after informing the club of intention to leave, Senegalese, who spent his previous year on loan at French side Dijon, were awol for 70 days and considered ‘missing’ since July. On his scandalous return club took a short break to release both player and official statement, claiming that Djilobodji’s has ‘comprehensively failed the fitness test’ so his £33,000-a-week contract has been terminated. We hope everyone’s happy now, but situation is utterly stupid.

  • Djilobodji joined Sunderland from Chelsea for €8 million in 2016 and made 18 appearances for the club
  • 29-year-old also has 13 caps for Senegal national team
