When you talk about racism in football, it's one of the the problems that persist despite the attempts of FIFA to kick it out. Racist abuse in football is very saddening especially when it's coming not from opposing fans but from a fellow professional footballer.

This brings us to the following footballers that have been banned for racism

 1. Emre Belozoglu

The Turkey professional player has been accused of racist tantrums not once or twice. In 2006, Emre was charged by FA for throwing racist tantrums against Nigerian footballer, Joseph Yobo. A year later, Emre was also accused of the same act against Senegalese player, El-Hadji Diof. When Emre moved to Turkey, he was also accused of the same act by Didier Zokora and he was given a two match ban. Emre is the first Turkish football to be convicted for racism

2. John Terry

The Chelsea former defender has also been charged for racist abuse and was given four-match ban. This happened between the match between Chelsea and QPR in 2011 when a video footage of John Terry calling Anton Ferdinand a "fucking cunt" surfaced. This statement didn't go well with FA and John Terry was banned for four matches as well as €220,000 fine.

3. Luis Suarez

The Uruguan's striker controversy is not limited to biting alone. He has also involved in racist abuse for more than two times. During a match between Liverpool and Manchester United in October 2011, Suarez was charged by FA for using insulting term "negro" to refer to Evra on the pitch. He later claimed that the term "negro" doesn't mean the same in Spanish as it does in English and that it's more of a friendly term used towards anyone with dark skin. This didn't convince FA and he was given an eight-match ban as well as a fine of €40,000

4. Cardona Tonev

Tonev is a Bulgarian winger who played for Celtic on a season-long loan from Premier League side Aston Villa. During a match with Aberdeen in 2014, Tonev was accused of hurling racist abuse against Shay Logan. The SFA investigated this allegation and upon found guilty, Tonev was given seven-match ban

5. Edwin Cardona

The Columbian player was not charged for hurling racist abuse vocally but by an offensive gesture he made towards South Korean's captain, Sung-Yueng Ki. During a friendly match between Columbia and South Korea, there was a scuffle between Cardona and his team mates and the South Korean captain, Cardona was caught making a "squinting eye" gesture towards the South Korean captain.

Although, the referee didn't notice this but the fans who were watching the game. FIFA intervened in this racist gesture and Cardona was banned for five international games.
