A lot of people including myself often assume that a player will make a great coach just as he was a great player. I've always thought players like Didier Drogba or Kanu Nwankwo could easily take up coaching job after hanging their boots and perform well as coaches.
The same way many some of us assume that Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi could easily take up coaching job after hanging their boots and perform excellently as coaches but this assumption is always false.
Playing football is not coaching just as studying is not teaching. Being a successful coach is beyond just sharing what worked for you and hoping your players tow the same path based on your demonstrations, after all, you've been there and done it.
Coaching is not just about expecting your players to be that skillful player or the scoring machine you were during your own career. The sad truth is that skilled players always have a hard time putting their actions into words and that's why most of them don't struggle as coaches. The main reason why players like Ronaldo or Messi may become coaches and goof.
The great Maradona never had a colorful career as a coach. He struggled and struggled but didn't perform well. If you check online you will see he's even rated among great players who didn't perform well as a coach
Although, you can mention a few coaches that were great players at their prime just they're rare therefore the reality of an assumption that a player like Ronaldo or Messi who dominated the leadership board and bagged five balon d'Or may not be right. Most great coaches of today were not really skilled players. Mourinho as a player didn’t have a stellar career as a player, but he ended up as one of the world’s leading football managers.
This is not only limited to football but other sports. Best players hardly end up as great coaches, so one of most overrated thoughts out there is that players like Ronaldo or Messi would become great coaches. It's a big fallacy.
