Best Performance/s of the Night :
[1] Khalil Rountree Jr. : he has always been a promising prospect in the 205lbs division and his consistency has been the issue. The move to Thailand seems to have really helped him, especially in tightening up his Muay Thai skills. He just dominated Anders for 3 rounds and what's more interesting was him keeping his composure. He knew Anders though may be not the most technical MMA fighter, packs power in his hands. The leg kicks in the 1st round completely shutdown the game of Anders. His KO win over Saki was impressive, but this performance showed a good deal of maturity and improvement.
[2] Dustin Poirier : master class performance from Poirier against one of the pound-for-pound best fighters on the planet. Poirier clearly had the power advantage and at first I thought he would be gassed out within in 3-4 rounds allowing Max to accumulate volume punches to get the finish, may be. But Poirier was in amazing shape and he kept the phase for all 5 rounds.
[3] Khalid Taha, Israel Adesanya
Taha : May be the fight wasn't really enough to get a full measurement of Taha's abilities as the fight ended just as it started. But he went up against a very good boxer/striker in Salmon who had the advantage in the technical striking department and the KO was brilliant. He slapped his arm away, measured the distance with a punch and came back with a massive shot. That is definitely one of the performances of the fight card.
Adesanya: though he wasn't this untouchable striker as advertised and self-hyped, he was focused on one thing and that is winning the title. Coming to the 5th and final round, they were even and he pushed more and he brought it to Kelvin. It was a close fight, Kelvin gave him hell, but Adesanya managed to get a decision in a gritty fight.
What is Next ?
- Dustin Poirier : the next match for Poirier MUST be against Khabib in a fair world. And that match-up will be an exciting one. How will Poirier manage Khabib's relentless pressure wrestling, because Khabib won't be going for a standup battle against him for sure. BUT we all know about UFC and money nowadays. They will most probably make the rematch between Khabib and Mcgregor as Mcgregor has already started the hype-campaign with his retirement---unretirement scheme and twitter trash talk.
- Max Holloway : Move up to lighweight will not be that easy for Max, especially against the higher echelon of rankings, where fighters with power and size advantage lie. So, I think the next match for him should be at 145lbs where he should defend the title, most probably against the Aldo vs. Volkanovski winner.
- Kelvin Gastelum : Romero vs. Gastelum sounds nice now with Jack Hermansson facing Jacare, and Rockhold eyeing 205lbs title. Or the winner of the great Anderson Silva vs. Jared Cannonier fight.
- Israel Adesanya : Robert Whittaker to unify the title. That's the fight everyone wants to see and UFC should make.
