Ahead of the 2018 Asian Games, Gelora Bung Karno stadium will be renovated. The improvements include various sports facilities in Jakarta and Palembang. In addition, the GBK complex will feature a new modern sports museum of 4,000 square meters and is expected to finish ahead of the 2018 Asian Games.

"The construction of sports museum in Gelora Bung Karno will be based on planning and deep study, it's expected to be the pride of the sports community in the country," said Deputy of Sports Empowerment Ministry of Youth and Sports Raden Isnanta.

The museum will occupy one of the main parts of the stadium. This museum will be made as attractive as possible including combination of color, installation art, contemporary interior design and multi media technology. Sports Museum in GBK will be well managed like the museum in Taiwan or the Olympic museum in Lausanne, Switzerland which is very cool and become tourism destination.

According to the head of the National Sports Museum, the Sports Museum is an important part of the sports history so moving it to the strategic area like GBK and the heart of national sports is a good strategy. The Sports Museum has high historical value and stores historical objects in the course of Indonesian sports, including the history of the Asian Games.

The relocation and modernization of the Sports Museum in the GBK Complex has the support of many parties, including Vice President of the Olympic Committee of Asia (OCA) Rita Subowo and sports expert Sri Sudono Sumarto. They hope the Sports Museum become an icon and sporting tourism destination, and participate in the 2018 Asian Games.

For long-term programs, the Sports Museum is expected to not only store historical objects, but also become a means of education about sports that can be equipped with modern facilities.
