Of recent times I have seen a lot of staunch believers of the Scorum platform expressing concern about the quality of content that is being posted vis a vis the posts that are making it to the hot and trending section. This is the first block chain platform that I have started to write on and have joined it more for the fun of writing than for what I am going to garner from the SCR going to the moon.
It is indeed true that the hot and trending pages of almost every page that you open is cluttered with contests and with substandard posts and if one is referred to a quality post, the only access to it is to go to the portfolio of the one who has posted it. Much as we all like Scorum and want it to succeed, we as a community have to go about it in the right way. I am one of those who have earned a little more than 500 SP by posting quite a few numbers of posts and am also wondering how these other posts make it to the top of the page and not those posted by the others which genuinely deserve to.
It took some time to understand that most of these contests and the substandard posts are either backed by whales or are posted by the heavyweights themselves. One self-vote and probably another one by a wealthy well-wisher are enough to propel them to the top and well ahead of those that are more relevant. The same thing happens to the contests also. One godfather is all it takes for one to garner attention and thus votes. Many of those who are complaining about this problem have also complained about their experiences on other platforms prior to Scorum.
There have also been many who repeatedly highlight the need to promote newer authors who post good content. By and large, their voices have fallen on deaf ears. I read one of the prominent contributors on the platform complaining about another equally prominent author and about his plagiarism. He had flagged the offending post and appealed to others to other follow suit or condemn the author. I was tracking the conversation for some and am afraid that no other member of our community bothered to even comment on the topic. Mayhap I did not follow long enough.
I, therefore, think it is up to each one of us, and more so to those who wield a higher power to reward, to ensure that we reward authors justly and not solely out of long-standing relationships. Relationships are bound to develop in communities like this. But let our rewards to those we are beholden to be just enough so that we can also reward other deserving contributors. With my short experience on a platform like this, that is the only plausible remedy to this malady that I can come up with. Very few people who curate and that bit is left only to the designated curator of that particular channel or dialect. Few move across pages to find good content. And that has to change if we have to grow.
PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS NO COMPULSION TO UVOTE THIS POST> THOSE WHO THINK OTHERWISE ARE PARTICULARLY WELCOME TO TELL ME SO AND I WILL UPVOTE YOUR COMMENT.
