Last month Rafael Nadal captured his 11th French Open title in 13 tries. His overall match record at the event is an astounding 86-2, a 97.7% win rate. Since he first competed in the event in 2005 he has only dropped a total of 25 sets in his 13 years of competing at the event. That is less than 2 sets per year. He has also won the tournament 3 times without dropping a single set throughout the entire tournament.
For an apples to apples comparison we will look at Roger Federers record at Wimbledon. He has won the event 8 times in 19 tries, the most wins at a single event other than Nadals 11 at the French Open. His record at Wimbledon is 91-11 a win rate of 89.2%. He has won the event once without dropping a set throughout the entire tournament, which he accomplished just last year. Federer has dropped a total of 61 sets through his 19 years of competing at Wimbledon, which is just over 3 per year. Very very dominant, but not quite as dominant as Nadal at Roland Garros.
Are there any other sports superstars who dominate a single event like Nadal? Let me know in the comments below.
