There have been some epic European nights for Liverpool at Anfield throughout their history but you have to feel that this would represent perhaps the 2nd greatest comeback in the club's history (3-0 against AC Milan in the final has to be number 1, right?) if they are to progress in this game.
Jurgen Klopp was very much of the opinion that a 3-0 scoreline was flattering for Barcelona. Liverpool certainly had their chances in the first leg with Mane, Milner and Salah all coming close to adding what would have been a crucial away goal(s) and the overall performance from the Reds was fairly decent. I guess the problem is that if apart from their finishing, you consider that Liverpool played at their full potential and still lost 3-0 then how are they going to change it around in the 2nd leg?
Things are hardly made easier by the fact that the home side will be without 2 thirds of their first choice attack with both Salah and Firmino ruled out of tomorrow's match. As shown in Sunday's game against Newcastle the likes of Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri have proved to be more than useful squad players who can make an impact from the bench but do they have enough to offer Liverpool some solace from this tie let alone a path to the final?
A team wearing a Barcelona kit lost 2-0 to Celta Vigo at the weekend but in all honesty it was a shadow side of the one that will turn out on Tuesday night. Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique, Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba were amongst the star names to be given the night off with the Catalan giants already having secured the La Liga title. By comparison Liverpool were embroiled in a blood and thunder 3-2 victory at Newcastle which directly contributed to the loss of star man Mo Salah. The incredible pace set by both Man City and Liverpool in the Premier League this season has no doubt contributed in large part to their Champions League campaigns petering out as even with their impressive squads injuries, fatigue and suspensions have caught up.
I guess the only thing that might work in Liverpool's favour at least in regards the outcome of this leg as opposed to the tie in general, is that Barcelona may be suffering from complacency. Will their players be as committed to the cause and willing to risk an injury or suspension knowing that the 2 most important fixtures they have left come are on the 25th May in the Copa Del Rey final and then assuming that they don't capitulate at Anfield the Champions League final a week later?
Of course, even if Liverpool were to get an early goal in this tie and exert some pressure on Barcelona then there is still the Messi factor to account for. In reality last week's match was a good contest between 2 evenly matched teams with the deciding factor being the Argentine maestro. The likelihood is that Barcelona will get an away goal in this leg which will leave Liverpool needing to hit 5 goals in reply to qualify. Going back to my original question then perhaps I am wrong this would be their greatest ever European comeback if they could pull it off.
