As of writing this, the UEFA Nations League starts in 50 days. The UEFA Nations League was a big topic several months ago when the final pieces of the puzzle were being set, but since the World Cup, the new national league has somewhat been lost in the commotion. But now that we are nursing a post-World Cup hangover, let’s revisit the new league and see what there is to be excited about.
Who
All 55 UEFA National teams, including France, Croatia, England, Germany, Italy, etc., will compete in a league that is divided into four divisions. National teams can be promoted and relegated the same as European club leagues. The four tiers work the same as in domestic leagues as well.
What
The teams are divided into four divisions (Leagues). 12 national teams in League A, 12 teams in League B, 15 teams in League C, and 16 teams in League D. Within each league, the groups are formatted and will play each other both home and away.
In the top division (League A), the winners of the four groups go on to play in the Nations League Finals, with two semi-finals and one final to decide which team becomes the UEFA Nations League champion.
Teams can also be promoted and relegated to a higher or lower division. Each group winner is automatically promoted for the next tournament. Each team placing last in its group is automatically relegated.
Where
All over Europe. Each nation will play both home and away in the group stages, allowing every team a chance to host matches. Opening match is Thursday, 6 September 2018: Germany vs France at Fußball Arena München, Munich
When
Every UEFA Nations League season will be played from September to November of an even-numbered year (group stage), and June of the following odd-numbered year (Nations League Finals of League A). Every two years, a new winner will be crowned.
Reaction
It’s still to be determined what type of lineup nations will field for this league. Of course this is the inaugural year, so it’s hard to have much expectation. These matches are meant to replace international friendlies and provide UEFA Nations more competitive matches. With a chance for the Euros up for grabs, many smaller nations will be gunning for top spots, forcing big nations to either field strong teams or step aside. Here’s to hoping for more entertaining national team matches throughout the year.
