Without missing words, volleyball ranks among the top “net” sport games, among footvolley, headies or sepak takraw e.t.c. where a net separates two sides and the main aim of each team is to strike the ball to the oppositions halve and score points whenever their opposition fails to return the ball back.

First glimpse

This is one of the most challenging topic I have written so far in the contest, Personally I have not partaken in the sport, for me it has always been watching from the stands or during summer games. compared to soccer in my country Nigeria volleyball is mildly played by young lads, for many reasons such as lack of knowledge of the game, the rules and more importantly the net and ball which is not readily accessible. In Nigeria, volleyball is majorly played in colleges. It is one of the fifteen sports approved by the Nigerian university games. I have watched couple of volleyball matches especially in college, even though I really don’t get the rules, is quite interesting watching the game, Players hitting the ball to each the opponent’s side.

The real deal

The summer Olympics is the highest ground to compete internationally . Volleyball became a part of it in 1964, and now have both male and female division. Since the implementation into the tournament the battle for Gold has been dominated by the United states, Brazil and former Soviet Union won it three times each. Unlike the men’s wing, gold medals are spread among five countries, Brazil, Cuba, China, Japan and the former Soviet Union countries. for the women’s division. Surprisingly the united states women volley ball team are yet to win the gold.

Basically there are several types of volleyball, but the two most practice competitively

Indoor volleyball

The game is played on a court inside, each team of 6 players are separated by a net. A single player is not allowed to touch the ball more than ones, each team allowed three maximum before to send the ball to the other side , with aid of hands or arms to push or strike the ball.

beach volleyball

this is played outside on the sand, and was formally adopted into the Olympic games in 1996, the court is mostly built around beaches. same rules as the indoor games just a variation in the number of players, each team consists of only two players, and a maximum of three touches is allowed before send the ball over the net. Teams gain points when the ball goes out.
