In a recent World Cup qualifier game against the Three Lions of England, supporters of Hungary were sighted targeting racial abuses on players of the English national side.
After investigations were made and they were found wanting, the World Football Governing body (FIFA) has gone on to place a stadium ban on the Hungarian football federation.
Asides from the ban, they were also fined a huge sum of over 160,000 euros.
Details of the stadium ban
According to a statement released by FIFA, the Hungarian national side will play their next home game behind closed doors. However, the second ban is to take place after two years.
More to that, they would be required to pay a huge sum of 160,000 euros.
Players targeted by the Hungarian racial abuse chants
Majorly, two English players were targeted by the Hungarian fans as they bowed to take a knee before the game.
Unfortunately, Manchester City's Raheem Sterling and Borrusia Dortmund's Jude Bellingham fell prey to these racial chants. Asides from the chants, missiles were also thrown at the English players throughout the game.
FIFA has their say
Despite pressure from many for FIFA to immediately punish the Hungarian football association, the World Football Governing Body took out time to ponder over the matter.
After careful consideration of the seriousness of the matter, a final decision was held. Which is as aforementioned. A stadium ban and a fine on the Hungarian fans.
Conclusion
The final decision taken by the World Football Governing Body (FIFA) is no doubt a welcome development. As it is the dream of all right-thinking football fans to see the act of racism eliminated from football.
We can all only wish that stricter measures will be imposed on the individuals involved in these racist actions.
