LFC Match Summary

As I watched Manchester City struggle to break down Watford yesterday afternoon, I felt a huge amount of frustration at the fact that they were awarded a clearly offside goal. People will argue that they went on to score another 2 goals, but that incident completely changed the game. It's hard enough having to compete against a team with the finances that Manchester City have, with a team that uses those finances to break Financial Fair Play rules, with a team that has one of the best managers in the world in Pep Guardiola, with a team that stacks players on the bench that would be guaranteed starters at almost all the clubs in the Premier League. But to have to then also compete with dodgy refereeing decisions like the offside goal and penalty given in their previous game, it feels like Liverpool are almost destined to fail in their pursuit of the Premier League title. Of course, this kind of talk is to be expected from a Liverpool supporter. There is no doubt that I am feeling the strain of this season emotionally. I feel exhausted in the stands, willing the team on with all that I can, my voice.

Liverpool are still in this title race. A win against Burnley at Anfield is nothing Liverpool supporters will be shouting from the rooftops about, but it is a sign that there is a fight within this squad that Jurgen Klopp has built. Conceding early in the game is never a good feeling, especially when the goal should have been disallowed for a foul on Alisson, but there wasn't panic in the stands or on the pitch. We've seen what this Liverpool team can do when they're against the ropes, and this was just another day at the office. Earlier in the day, when the teams were announced, I couldn't help but think about Klopp's decision to include Lallana in the starting 11 over the likes of Shaiqiri and Keita. Lallana has struggled for fitness over the last couple of years and, when he has been available for selection, he's often failed to impress. Nonetheless, Klopp is clearly seeing something in training that the supporters aren't privy to, and it showed on the pitch today. Lallana's tireless pursuit of the ball was fantastic to watch and for me, he's the man of the match, despite not scoring a goal.

There has been a lot of talk about Liverpool's attacking players recently and how they're not living up to their usual standards. Although this may be the case in glimpses, it's difficult to criticise them too much. Salah was always going to struggle to reach the heights of last season. He's a marked man now and teams look to shut him out like never before. Yet, Salah has still managed to score 17 goals in the Premier League so far this season. Not too bad for a player who is apparently a one season wonder. Mane is often overlooked but has been outstanding for large parts of this campaign. Scoring 4 in 4 games recently, he went on to bag another 2 today and they were certainly important goals. Likewise, Firmino has been misfiring lately so to add another 2 goals to his tally will do him the world of good. When Liverpool's defence were unable to maintain a clean sheet, the attacking players stepped up and got the job done.

The Final Word

This was a difficult game for Liverpool as the pressure was on with Manchester City going 4 points clear at the top of the table. A loss here would have felt like the end of the road but Liverpool aren't ready to give up that easily. Weather conditions made things tricky but the 3 points are all that matters and the Reds did their job in this round of fixtures. On to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday when Liverpool will be looking to extend their run in Europe this season.
