If you believe what Jurgen Klopp has been saying recently then it's unlikely that Liverpool will be making any signings in the January transfer window. This comes as no surprise to supporters of the Reds as the club has often done most of its business within the summer windows. However, I am not sure that this is the most appropriate way to deal with things and could come back to haunt the club.

The January transfer window is notoriously difficult to work within. One of the main reasons for this is that clubs are very reluctant to lose their players midway through a season. Nobody wants to go into the second half of a season with a weaker squad so convincing clubs to sell requires a lot of money. I get it. Liverpool in particular are keen to make deals for players only when they feel they are getting value for their money. For the kind of player they're likely scouting, transfer fees could quickly become an issue if they're having to convince clubs to sell to them in January.

Yet, the January transfer window is an opportunity to show that the club is serious about winning the league this season. We all know that Manchester City are the favourites, and that's hardly surprising considering the players they have at the club, but it's nowhere near a sure thing at this point in time. Signing new, top quality players can have a positive effect on the current squad. As an example, look at Tottenham this season. They failed to sign any players in the summer and they look somewhat jaded already. They haven't had the positive boost that other clubs have had from their newest additions.

All of this is just hot air, however, as Klopp is very set in his ways and will only buy a player if he really wants him. There's no plan B, C, or D in place here and in many ways that's a good thing. However, I do feel that there are some areas within which Liverpool could improve, and although I may need to wait until summer to see what happens, I'd love to see Klopp make some bold statements in January.

Defender

Liverpool's defence has improved massively since Virgil van Dijk was brought into the team. He's a Rolls-Royce kind of centre back. The type of player who could slot into pretty much any team in the world and look good. Joe Gomez has become a wonderful partner for van Dijk this season and there's still loads of room for improvement when you consider his age.

The main issue for me is the lack of worthy cover for van Dijk and Gomez in the centre of defence. Dejan Lovren can be pretty useful at times but he has a mistake in him and he's let me down too many times for me to trust him on a long-term basis. More of a worry, however, is Joel Matip. He looked the part when he signed on a free transfer a couple of years ago but injuries have seemingly taken their toll and he now looks a shadow of his former self. Should either van Dijk of Gomez be ruled unfit to play for any length of time, I am not confident that their replacements are adequate to keep the defensive record as it currently stands. This could be a huge blow to Liverpool's aspirations this season. I'd love to see a worthy replacement come in for Matip.

Attacking Midfielder

As the Fekir deal fell through in the summer transfer window due to concerns over his knees, I was worried that Liverpool would be left a little light in the attacking midfield department. Sadly, this has been the case because Adam Lallana is nowhere near the quality required to play a major role in a title challenging team. He's slow, lightweight, and halts up the attacking plays that Liverpool are now well known for. I would like to see the Reds sign a top quality playmaker to replace Lallana in the squad and provide Klopp with an option to change games if required.

Striker

Liverpool's front three are a fantastic trio and I don't think Klopp needs to make any changes in that department. However, there are a couple of players in the squad that simply don't make the grade and need to be replaced. Both Divock Origi and Dominic Solanke lack the quality required to replace any of the front three if needed and I feel that Klopp would be wise to look for an additional striker who could push the front three for a place. Timo Werner would be my choice in this department but I'm not sure what kind of fee he would command.

Sadly, I cannot see any of these additions being made in January but it would be a pleasant surprise to even see one of them taken care off. If I had to choose which area to prioritise then it would be the attacking midfielder role. This kind of player is something Liverpool needs to find following the loss of Coutinho.
