Name and seat of the club

The complete name of the club is - Fussball Club Bayern, München e. V. (Football Club Bavaria, Munich).

However, most people speak of FC Bayern Munich, Bayern Munich or FC Bayern for short.

The club is located in the Bavarian capital Munich.

Founding year

FC Bayern was founded on 27 February 1900 in a Munich pub when the footballers split off from MTV Munich and the F.C. Bayern was founded. Interesting at this point is that the founders of the club were for the most part NOT from Munich or even Bavaria, but from Berlin, Freiburg, Leipzig or Bremen.

Club logo

Club colours

The current club colours are red and white. However, it is interesting to note that the original club colours were chosen when the club with blue and white was founded. In 1906, the club decided to transfer to the Munich Sports Club as an independent football department with the new name "F.A. Bayern im Münchner SC" with the new colours red (for the trousers) and white (for the jerseys).

Official Website

The official website of FC Bayern is:

Current and former stadiums

In the early years of the club, the venues changed more frequently, which was nothing unusual for the time. At first, the Bavarians played their games on the town square on Schyrenstraße before they moved to Schwabing on Clemensstraße and then to Leopoldstraße. Until 1925 the venues of the games changed again and again. From 1925 the Bavarians first found their home in the Grünwald Stadium as subtenants of TSV 1860 Munich and then of the city of Munich. After the end of the Olympic Games in 1972, the Bavarians moved to the Munich Olympic Stadium.

Since 2005, FC Bayern Munich's current venue has been its own Allianz Arena in Munich Fröttmaning.

Nickname

In the motherland of football, England, it is common for clubs to have nicknames. This is not quite as pronounced in Germany as on the island. Nevertheless, FC Bayern Munich also has its nicknames. The probably most used nickname is short and simply "Die Bayern". Another nickname used more in the Munich area is "Die Roten", which is probably aimed at the club colours on the one hand and on the other hand is probably the demarcation to the second prominent club from Munich, the TSV 1860 Munich (the Sechzgern) whose colours are white and blue.

Club members

With 291,000 members (as of November 2018), FC Bayern München is the sports club with the largest number of members in the world. The Bavarians have thus left the big clubs in England and Spain as well as Portugal behind.

The League Cup was a cup competition played out from 1997 to 2007 in the form of a one-week mini tournament sponsored by the then television rights owner Premiere. The League Cup had little sporting significance but was well endowed with a good 5 million euros in prize money. FC Bayern won this trophy six times in the following years

This was only a list of the most important titles, the list would be much longer, one would list all titles that the Bavarians have achieved in their history.

Defeats

The list of Munich's successes and titles is eternally long and clearly shows that FC Bayern Munich is one of the absolute Top clubs in the world.

However, there were embarrassments and failures with the Bavarians in the long time of their existence. There were embarrassments again and again in the Star Ensemble of the Munich club and FC Bayern was therefore mocked for a long time as FC Hollywood. The list of anecdotes is huge and would go beyond the scope of this report.

Among the failures of the recent past there are two events to mention that even fed on the Munich people's self-image.

These include in any case the Lost Champions League Final 1999 against Manchester United. In this unforgettable final, the Munich team led 1-0 until shortly before the end and already looked like the sure winner. However, the Munichers were careless in injury time so that first Teddy Sheringham in the 91 minute scored the equalizer, then in the 93 minute even the death blow by Ole Gunnar Solskjear to get the 93 minute. This defeat still sits deep at FC Bayern.

The second event was the Lost CL Final 2012 "dahoam", at home in the own stadium of the Allianz Arena. The Bavarians lost here in the penalty shootout against FC Chelsea. The defeat of this final in their own stadium was a disaster and a catastrophe for the Munich team and still gnaws at their self-image today. However, this defeat was also a symbol for the whole season, in which they only became runners-up behind Dortmund in the Bundesliga and also lost the DFB final against Dortmund. So a triple of a special kind.

Major former players and club legends as well as record players

The list of former FC Bayern Munich players reads like the "Who's Who" of German and international football.

Here there were players who have achieved legendary status within the club. These include Franz Beckenbauer (the Kaiser), Paul Breitner, Uli Hoeneß (today's president), Oliver Kahn (the Titan), Sepp Maier (the cat of Anzing), Lothar Matthäus, Gerd Müller (the bomber of the nation), Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (today's CEO), Mehmet Scholl, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Philipp Lahm, Franck Ribbery and Arjen Robben.

Among the record players are among others the following

Sepp Maier mit 699 played games

Oliver Kahn mit 632 played games

Gerd Müller mit 605 played games

Franz Beckenbauer mit 582 played games

The record scorers are

Gerd Müller mit 564 Goals

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge mit 217 Goals

Thomas Müller mit 191 Goals

Fans and Fanclubs

As already mentioned above, FC Bayern Munich is the largest sports club in the world with approx. 291,000 members. With nearly 4,500 registered fan clubs and 350,000 registered members, FC Bayern is one of the largest clubs in the country and worldwide. The unregistered fans are not countable, but are probably in the millions.

Fan rivalries

Fan rivalries exist locally with TSV 1860 Munich and 1. FC Nuremberg. In Germany there are rivalries with Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04.

In Germany it is among football fans so that one either holds it with FC Bayern Munich or one has a deep dislike.

I leave it up to you where you position yourselves.

Fanfriendships

Fan friendships include VfL Bochum, FC St. Pauli and Carl Zeiss Jena.

General information

There would still be a lot to tell about FC Bayern, but that would go beyond the scope of this post. Nevertheless I hope that I could deliver some information, which you didn't know yet.
