It's official now. After a year of waiting, the VAR system will be used since next season at the UEFA Champions League. The UEFA Executive Committee gave ok to President Ceferin's project, where this system will be used in the August playoffs of the largest club competition. So no technology aid will be used this season, and it is difficult to think of such an important tournament without this support for the arbitrators. But Ceferin was clear in the draw at Montecarlo. Judges are not ready yet and UEFA needs to adjust the facilities and structures in order to be ready for the same standard. Slovenia was very cautious about this situation, as it is another thing to organize a tournament like the World Cup, which takes place in just one place, and is otherwise a tour involving 55 nations. The idea of the European federation is to test VAR in the upcoming European Supercup on August 14 in Istanbul, and then officially depart the Champions. One season later, 2020-2021, enlargement will also take place in the Europa League.
